Crowdfunding as a Tool

Crowdfunding is an increasingly common tool when it comes to financing a new product launch. Through crowdfunding, eCom businesses are able to simultaneously raise awareness and fund the first production cycle of a new product. There can be some major promotional and logistical advantages to launching a crowdfunding campaign through a platform like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. One such advantage is the ability to promote a product concept prior to having all of the logistics of distribution sorted out. Some widely known products got their start on crowdfunding platforms - and arguably never would have achieved such success without them (ShipDaddy is working with a Kickstarter client right now - and we'll tell you all about them below).

Don’t Sleep on the Fulfillment

Fulfilling crowdfunded projects is quite different from fulfilling traditional eCommerce items. One of the main differences is with how the orders are placed and fulfilled. With traditional eCom fulfillment, there’s usually a steady flow of orders that come in over time and get fulfilled on a rolling basis. However, with crowdfunded products, there’s one order of a large number of products that need to be picked, packed, and shipped relatively quickly and in large batches.  

In-House Fulfillment vs. Outsourcing

As a merchant, you already know people want their orders, and they want them ASAP. Falling short on fulfillment will leave you with angry customers that could become very active reviewers (and we don’t want that). Plus, if the actual cost of storage and reward fulfillment isn’t fully accounted for, it can be a huge problem for profit margins and the long term success of the venture. A lot of eCommerce business owners can end up pretty overwhelmed after coming down from the initial high of a successful crowdfunding campaign.  And even though most entrepreneurs are used to grinding out long days and short deadlines, a successful Kickstarter campaign is usually too much to handle for even the most motivated business owners.

In-house fulfillment can be an option for smaller crowdfunding projects, but the more successful campaigns will usually require a fulfillment partner experienced in handling large volume shipping. Another consideration is that most fulfillment companies will not work with crowdfunding projects because of order minimums, customer longevity, and customization level - there are too many variables most 3PL's don't want to deal with.
